'If marriage vows are going to be serious, then people should not be able to break them whenever they feel like it'. Do you agree? 4 marks

  1. Christians would fully support this statement, because Christians see marriage as a gift from God, for the benefit of humankind, as described in Genesis 2:24 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh”. The wedding vows are a public commitment to emphasise the everlasting agape love (between the couple and between God), peace and faithfulness of a couple, and to break these vows would mean destroying God’s “perfect plan” for every human (Jeremiah 29:11).

The wedding vows also emphasise the unalterable word of God. For example, “till death do us part” in the second vow shows that marriage is a lifelong commitment. This is reiterated in the Bible, “What God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matthew 19:6). Since the word of God is sacred and is to be revered and honoured by all Christians, therefore people should not be able to break the wedding vows whenever they feel like it either.
