'Giving children a religious upbringing is the best start in life they could have.' Do you agree? 4 marks

  1. Some people might disagree (heavily!) with this statement. After all, there are children in the world not brought up in a religious environment but who are perfectly happy and demonstrate all of the moral and psychological attributes of a child brought up in a religious environment. If one argued that a religious upbringing helps the child to later get into heaven and be rewarded after death, then it might also be countered that the loving God of Christianity should, by Protestant teaching, allow all of those people who have done good deeds in their lifetime to enter heaven, and not just those who have done so in the name of religion. A child brought up in a non religious environment could also be said to have a more open mindset to other religions, as a religious child would likely believe that their own faith is superior to all others (otherwise why would they believe it?), and therefore by suited better to a society that seeks indivuduality.

  2. Other people may agree with this. Alot of religions set a proper guideline to what is moral and ethical. They have teachings and offer group acitivities that promote the idea of love, friendship, kindness etc. In a religious upbringing, since everyone around you should be devoted to God. They will be under the influence of the bible therefore should more or less be essentially good. This could create a good start to someones life.

  3. Adding onto Tim’s point, Christians would most definitely agree with this statement. This is because Christianity teaches that it is the sacred duty of parents to raise their children within a Christian upbringing, so that they may learn to love and honour God as well. Additionally, many of the Ten Commandments are guidelines which help children to become more independent and love and honour their parents, as well as God. If Christian parents provide their children with a Christian family of agape love and faithfulness, children will come to understand the Fifth Commandment, “Honour your father and mother”.

Furthermore, typical children may swear (breaking the third commandment), steal (breaking the eighth commandment) and lie (breaking the ninth commandment) - whereas if children were brought up in a Christian upbringing, they would already understand the importance of these Commandments and how to apply them to everyday life, thus making them better people in society and more respected by their peers. Finally, the greatest Commandment is love. If children are brought up with the second greatest Commandment “Love your neighbour as yourself” at the very heart of their lives, they will be kind and helpful children, and grow up to be useful members of society. This teaching means that they have a duty to help others, and to honour their peers. Therefore, giving children a religious (Christian) upbringing is the best start in life they could have.
