Outline Christian attitudes to divorce

1 comment:

  1. Roman Catholics do not allow divorce because Jesus proclaimed “what God has joined together, let man not separate” (Matthew 19:6). Marriage is a sacrament and a covenant with God, therefore Catholics strongly oppose divorce.

Anglicans believe that divorce can be accepted in particular circumstances, because “it also recognises that some marriages sadly do fail” (General Synod, 2002), therefore Anglicans permit divorce in some cases (lesser of the two evils).

The Church of Scotland is more liberal and allows divorce, because “marriage is not understood in the Church of Scotland to be a sacrament”, therefore it is not so much an eternal bond with God, and thus is allowed.
