Explain why there are different attitudes to re-marriage in Christianity (8 marks)

  1. There are different attitudes to remarriage in Christianity because different denominations interpret the Bible in unique ways.

Roman Catholicism believes that remarriage should not be allowed under any circumstances. This is because marriage is a sacrament, and a lifelong commitment. It also breaks the covenant with God because even if a civil divorce recognises that the couple has been separated, they are still joined together as “one flesh” in the eyes of God. Humans cannot break this sacred covenant. It also breaks the wedding vows, for example “forsaking all others” (first vow) and “till death do us part” (second vow). Remarriage signifies unfaithfulness and defies the word of God, therefore Catholics do not permit it. Additionally, Jesus proclaimed “anyone who divorces his wife … and marries another woman commits adultery” (Matthew 5:32, Matthew 19:9, Mark 10:11, Luke 16:18, Romans 7:3). This shows that remarriage is a sin; it is “detestable in the eyes of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 24:4) and breaks the Seventh Commandment, “You shall not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14). Therefore, Catholics are strongly against remarriage because the Ten Commandments are the basis of Christian teachings and laws.

Liberal Christians like Methodists believe that remarriage is acceptable. They believe that God is omnibenevolent, because His greatest commandments were “love God” and “love your neighbour as yourself”. Therefore, remarriage is allowed because God is forgiving; sent His one and only Son Jesus Christ to be crucified on the cross for our sins. Paul also taught in 1 John 1:9 that God “is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”, showing that even though a couple may have divorced and broken the vows made in God’s eyes, He will give Christians a second chance to do good acts of righteousness. God told Christians “For I know the plans I have for you” (Jeremiah 29:11), and marriage was included in God’s plan for humans (Genesis 2:24), therefore if Christians have made a mistake once in their first marriage, Methodists believe that God, in all His compassionate ways, will allow remarriage.

  2. The protestant church also allows remarriage as it is the "lesser of two evils". The "lesser of two evils" refers to possible situation in which it includes children. By having a remarriage, it would provide a better environment for the children to grow up in (it is one of the purposes for marriage: to provide a safe and secure environment for children to grow up in). Jesus also taught that we should be loving and forgiving; therefore, the protestant church allows remarriage.
