2008 b Describe ONE religious experience.

Can somebody define Religious experience for me?

4 comments:

  1. there are 4 types of religious experience.

Numinous: the feeling that there is a greater "power" beyond this world, which some people believe to be God (or the presence of God). It is most commonly described as a sense of "awe and wonder". Examples include entering a Church (or religious building) or looking up at the stars. It is transcendent - going beyond the normal, everyday experience, and exists outside of the material world.

Do you want the other 3 types of religious experiences? (Conversion, Miracles and (answered) Prayers)

  2. Religious experience - experiencing God in some personal way or other. (Special revelation? :/)

    Miracles:
A miracle is an event which breaks the laws of science inherent in nature for which the only explanation is God, especially if the miracle occurred at some time or place with connections to religion.

For example, there are accounts in the Bible of Jesus performing miracles - such as raising a man, Lazarus from the dead. This was a miracle, because Lazarus had already died - and since no human can bring the dead back to life (that would be contrary to the laws of science), the only explanation was the intervention of God.

Another example could be miraculous healing - patients dying of terminal illness miraculously recovering after attending a healing service. Since that's not exactly a natural occurrence, it might be attributed to God and called a 'miracle'.

    hope that helps

  3. Another type of religious experience is answered prayer. One well known example in the bible is when Moses parted the red sea (Exodus 14:13-22). This is a religious experience because the definition of a religious experience is 'an experience that conveys the sense of the presence of God.' This is a good example because only God could have parted the Red Sea and so conveys a sense of his presence.

  4. This question is a mean one. You can only refer to one type of religious experience. Pheebs...you have correctly identified the four different types of religious experiences.

Ben and Emily, you can use the definition for a religious experience overall but you will not be awarded extra marks for it...just the definition gets you a level one mark (2 marks).

Emily, your post overall provides the basis for an excellent answer. You would only have to add a small amount of explanation to your second example of a miracle.
