  1. When there are multiple ethnic groups living in one society problems occur as a result of prejudice and discrimination because different ethnic groups disagree on certain things within a society. For example one ethnic group may prefer a different election party to another. As a result problems would arise that would not arise if a society consisted of only one ethnic group. Different ethnic groups believe in different things and thus problems will inevitabley occur.

  2. Prejudice and discrimination causes problems in a multi-ethnic society because these potentially stir up hatred between different ethnic groups and consequently lead to civil conflict. For example, the recent conflict in Darfur was caused by the government discriminating against black Africans in favour of Arabs. This resulted in widespread violence and fighting, and even attempted genocide targeting African Muslims. This example shows that what begins simply as prejudice and discrimination leads into disharmony and open hatred. When a certain ethnic group is favoured over another, the oppressed ethnic group commonly turns to conflict in a bid to ‘lash back’ at those who they deem their oppressors. Innocent people are killed because they are associated with these oppressors. Therefore, prejudice and discrimination pose problems for multi-ethnic societies; not only because they breed distrust between people, but also because of their ability to create civil conflict, death and destruction, making society fall apart.

  3. Prejudice and discrimination would cause problems in a multi-ethnic society because people would stereo-type other races. This would show itself in the community as acts of discrimination like promoting Asian races before promoting African races for example. This will cause problems because it will force the some of the people in of these races to steal. And this would change their stereotype. reinforcing the stereotype that black people are law breakers and will cause more people to not hire them making them have to steal more. So prejudice and discrimination create a viscous cycle of constantly changing stereotypes and that is why it causes a problem in a multi-ethnic society

  4. There are several reasons as to why prejudice and discrimination cause problems in a multi-ethnic society. Firstly, since not all ethnic groups have the same beliefs or hold the same value to their different beliefs - which may also be unique to the beliefs and/or values of other ethnic groups - therefore they cannot all live together in perfect social harmony. This would also mean that the people belonging to their respective ethnic groups will tend to stay within these "boundaries" and this could cause segregation, which is problematic because it implies poor communication and interaction skills and the society will not be able to develop rapidly. In extreme cases, this could produce race-hate crimes such as bombing and terrorism, and this would disrupt the entire order and stability within that society. Therefore, prejudice and discrimination cause problems in a multi-ethnic society as different ethnic groups tend to distance themselves from other groups anyway, and by placing them together in one society it could possibly result in increased crime rates in that society.

  6. Explain why prejudice and discrimination cause problems in a multi-ethnic society

A multi ethnic society is often more productive and succesful then a society which only has one ethnic group. However, when prejudice and discrimination is present in a multi ethnic society, things starts to dreadfully fall apart.

Prejudice and discrimination are the things which turns different ethnic groups in a society against each other. For example, if a white person has a prejudice about blacks, and gives them less pay than a white person, then the black person will feel discriminated and left out. This in turn will make the black person work less harder then usual, and may arouse conflicts, eg fights.

Discrimination is believed by some people the cause of terroists, as a particular ethnic group feels unwelcome and attacked by another group, so they retaliate.

  7. There are many reasons why a multi-ethnic society causes problems.

First of all, in every society, there will always be people who have racist feelings towards particular groups of people. This causes numerous problems. For example, many people often stereotype black people, saying that they are thieves or people who always cause crime. This common view on blacks may well lead to false accusations and wrongful discrimination. Furthermore, prejudice and discrimination against particular races in society will mean that the people belonging to those races will not have as good a quality of life than those belonging to supposedly "superior races".

Secondly, sexism is another major issue, especially in undeveloped countries like Iraq. In countries like these, women have a very low status and have little say in society. This shows that the society is not taking full advantage of its potential resources, meaning that its development is rather slow and with only half of its capable population contributing. Another simple point is that in multi-ethnic societies, conflict would be rife amongst its civilians.

  8. Prejudice and discrimination can cause problems within the society.

In most societies, there is usually a range of people with different ethnic backgrounds living together. The multi-ethnic society could potentially make people turn on each other and retaliate with racism. This could be a problem as discrimination may segregate the society. As a result of this, many problems may arise. Without a multi-cultural society, life becomes boring as nothing new or interesting has been introduced.

People are cautious towards something that is new or unknown, the presence of a 'new' race or culture that has been introduced to a person has to be explained and taught at a level that can help the person to understand. Without this, a multi-cultural society can be full of racism and discrimination.
