  1. Hindus disagreeing with the statement might say that the Vedas is not out of date. This is because the Vedas is believed to hold timeless, eternal truths. For example, one such truth would be that although Hindus give many names to different aspects of God, in reality there is only one God, Brahman. This is a core belief of Hinduism and has always been considered true. If these truths such as the given example are eternal and have always existed, they will continue to exist and will always hold true. Therefore, if these truths expounded by the Vedas are forever eternal, they can never be ‘out of date’.

So the Vedas isn't out of date.

  2. Some that disagree with this statement may state that as the Vedas were produced by Brahma at the very start of creation; they are eternal. The Bhagwatam says "Brahma produced the eternal scriptures, Rigved, Yajurved, Samved, Atharvaved and also the Puranas which are like the fifth Ved.” If the Vedas hold eternal knowledge, then they cannot be out of date by existing as 'eternal truths' they will always remain that way.

  3. Many people who follow the Hindu faith believe that the scriptures written a long time ago are out of date and do not apply or hold any significance to modern times. I do not agree with this. The Vedas are known to hold the eternal truths of Hinduism; as written by Brahman. These do not change and are permanent. They cannot be outdated if they have always existed and always will exist. This is why the Vedas are not out of date.

  4. Some people may agree with the statement and say the Vedas ARE out of date. The say this because even in some aspects of Hinduism today, modern knowledge or technology - for example, from science - is more useful in everyday life. Additionally, they say the Vedas are out of date since one particular aspect of the Vedas were that it formed part of the study of students in the Brahmacharya ashrama, traditionally. Since the majority of Hindus do not strictly follow the Brahmacharya stage and live with a guru and his family, therefore part of what the Vedas were traditionally used for is no longer valid in Hinduism. Furthermore, the society has changed significantly since the Vedas were written, especially since they are described to be one of the "earliest revelations". Using the varnas or caste system as an example (used in comparison with the Vedas), today the varnas which once played an important role in Hinduism are not as strict, and not as revered: Dalits are gradually gaining more respect and their rightful place in society, and on many occassions in countless places all over the world the barriers of caste are broken free. This would have happened extremely rarely decades ago. Therefore, the Vedas are out of date because numerous other aspects of Hinduism are also slowly becoming out of date in this modern world, and appealing new technology is gradually replacing ancient scriptures, and in this case the Vedas.

  5. From Ben...

There are those who agree with the statement because times have changed drastically since the Vedas were created. Today science is often thought to hold more truth than ancient religious texts because people’s attitudes towards religion and life have changed. For example a majority of Hindus no longer follow the Brahmacharya stage of life because it is simply not feasible in modern life.

However some do disagree with the statement. They feel that the Vedas are eternal and therefore will always hold value no matter the time or era we live in. Therefore those who no longer follow the Vedas because they believe them to be out of date are no longer following their religion correctly.

Personally I do not agree with the statement simply because of the fact that I don’t believe in God. The Vedas can only be eternal if they were given by God but if for me God does not exist then the Vedas cannot be eternal. Therefore they are out of date because times have changed since they were written.

  6. I disagree with this statment. Although times have changed peoples morals and how they should live their lives have not. In anceint India it was a crime against humanity and they would gain bad karma if they murdered. The same view is held today although it may be not punished in the same way. So to call a scripture out of date is like saying that the law although writen in the past is also out of date

Another reason that makes me disagree with the statement is that to call the Vedas old you would also be calling all other religons old. For example the Ten Commandments are still relevent today. So why can't the Vedas still be relevent?

  7. Sahar: Some who may disagree with the statement can say that the Vedas are NOT out of date because they are eternal as they were given my Brahma and therefore are considered as shruti texts. Also, there are so many people worldwide who still believe and apply Vedic teachings to their lives right now. Because so many people still believe in the teachings, they can not be out of date.

  8. Some Hindus say that because the vedas have been written eons ago, at the beginning of the creation of the universe, that it's laws no longer applies to the Modern world. Life has evolved so much and is so different from the stone ages, so although the Vedas may hold some truth most is too outdated for modern life.

An example which supports this is the bible in Christianity. It has the old and the new testament, with the New testament it can be more easily related to then the Old one.

However, some Hindus also say that because the Vedas was revealed by Brahma himself. Because the gods are eternal and timeless, they must have revealed truths which are eternal as well.

Therfor, i believe that most of the truths of the Vedas are accurate but some might not apply to everyday life.

  9. The issue is whether or not the Vedas are out of date. Those who argue that they are would say that the Vedas were written many many years ago, so in order for them to be applicable to life today, they have to be re-adapted. These people would also say that with the rapidly changing modern society, many young Hindus do not read the Vedas anymore or find them useful.

On the other hand, although not everyone would agree, I would like to argue that the Vedas are not out of date. First of all, there are many stories in the Vedic scriptures which many Hindus , young and old, would still enjoy reading. Furthermore, there are many virtues and qualities conveyed through these scriptures which modern Hindus could still follow.

In conclusion, I feel that the Vedas are NOT out of date.
